Defense Minister Yisrael Katz called at noon (Tuesday) for the appointment of Major General David Zini to the position of head of the Shin Bet, after last night Legal Advisor to the Prime Minister Gali Baharav-Miara hinted that she doubted whether he could be promoted.

Katz said: "Major General David Zini is an outstanding officer who was a candidate in my opinion as Minister of Defense for promotion in the IDF in the next round of appointments. The IDF, led by Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir, advocates an offensive approach and currently needs commanders of the type of Major General Zini, with experience and proven ability and an offensive approach that advocates the defeat of the enemy.".
He emphasized: "After responding to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's request to be a candidate for the position of head of the Shin Bet, and this for reasons of the state's good, his appointment to the position should be allowed as quickly as possible.".
The Defense Minister added: "I am well acquainted with the activities of the General Security Service and am convinced of Major General David Zini's suitability to head the organization and to fulfill the role in the most appropriate manner for the benefit of the security and defense of the State of Israel. I wish him great success in fulfilling his role.".
Political commentator Amit Segal wrote: "There is something strange and interesting about the timing of the announcement. But yesterday the Attorney General claimed that whoever expressed a position on the Zini issue could not be the minister to whom the choice would be transferred. Is this a defiance of her? Or is it a 'burning' of the option that Schatz will choose, in order to transfer it to another minister if necessary?""
