President of the State of Israel Yitzhak Herzog spoke today (Sunday) at a Bible study held at the President's Residence on the occasion of Jerusalem Day - and implicitly referred to the appointment of Shin Bet head David Zini.
""I warn and warn - let no one think of disobeying, neither the rulings of the courts nor the provisions of the law. In the Jewish and democratic State of Israel - the rule of law is not a recommendation, but a fundamental existential principle," Herzog emphasized.
According to him, the mere raising of the possibility of not complying with the provisions of the law or the rulings of the High Court constitutes a direct violation of the fundamental principles of the state.
""Anyone who even discusses the possibility of violating the law and court rulings harms not only the cohesion of our people and Israeli democracy, but also Israeli statehood and sovereignty.".
He added: "The prophets of Israel taught us - there is no sovereignty without morality, and there is no morality without law.".
Justice Minister Yariv Levin 'stinged' cynically: "Mr. President, I assume that your warning is directed at Justices Amit and Barak-Erez, who rule time and again in violation of the express provisions of the law. If that is so, I agree with your warning.".
