The designated head of the Shin Bet, Major General David Zini, seeks to subdue Hamas - and opposes a hostage deal that would restore the terrorist organization's capabilities.
In a closed discussion at the General Staff, Major General David Zini said: "I am against hostage deals, this is an eternal war."
According to a report on Channel 12 this evening, this was not a random statement. During another discussion held at the Southern Command a few months ago, Zini turned to former Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi and told him: "You prioritize the return of the kidnapped over the dismantling of Hamas" - a statement that sparked a loud confrontation, according to some of those present.
Security sources who were present at the discussions say that Zini "does not take the hostages into account" and that his position on the issue of the hostages is clear and consistent - stubborn opposition to the deal.
According to them, in contrast to the position that led the IDF throughout the period - to manage military pressure while taking into account the situation of the hostages, Zini is taking a completely different line: "With Zini, this was not a parameter," said one of the sources.
Another security source told Hadashot 12: "Zini's opinion regarding the weight that should be given to hostages during fighting is known in the General Staff. His position against hostage deals is also known. Until now, he was in the minority in the room and in his opinion had no influence - this will not be the case if he is appointed head of the Shin Bet."
