Reuters reported today (Tuesday) that the new Syrian government transferred the archive of legendary Israeli spy Eli Cohen to Israel as a gesture of goodwill to US President Donald Trump and as an attempt to calm relations with Israel.
Reuters received the information from three different sources in Syria, including an advisor to Syrian President Ahmed al-Shara.
The news agency stated that the sources are a Syrian security official, an advisor to President al-Shara, and a person familiar with the secret channel between the countries.
According to them, the dossier was offered to Israel indirectly as a gesture intended to calm spirits and build trust with President Trump.
Israel denies the report.
On Sunday, it was revealed that as part of a secret Mossad operation, approximately 2,500 documents, photos, and personal belongings of spy Eli Cohen were brought to Israel - 60 years after he was hanged in the main square in Al-Marja in Damascus.
This is actually the official Syrian archive on Cohen, containing thousands of findings that were collected by Syrian intelligence after the capture of the Israeli spy and were kept in a highly classified manner for decades.
The Mossad statement said that the archive was brought "in cooperation with a strategic partner service.".
In a special meeting held in the presence of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Mossad Director Dedi Barnea, Eli Cohen's widow, Nadia Cohen, was presented with a number of original documents and personal items from the finds found in Syria. Among the documents was the original will, which Cohen wrote hours before his execution, of which only a copy has been publicly revealed so far.
