"Our policy is 'America First,' which is why we are working to end the war in Gaza... The president continues, not only he, but also his national security team, to take part in talks with both sides in this conflict. He has made it clear to Hamas that he wants all the hostages released. He wants this conflict to end, not just for money but also to save lives," Levitt said at a press briefing.
A White House spokeswoman declined to comment on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's statement on sending aid to Gaza: "I'll let the president talk about that himself.".
Just yesterday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio addressed the situation in the Gaza Strip in an interview with CBS and made it clear that the United States supports the complete destruction of the terrorist organization: "We support the destruction of Hamas, for a future for the people of Gaza that is free from Hamas and full of opportunities.".
However, Rubio clarified that the US administration is working to achieve a ceasefire, among other things, to release additional hostages.
He said, "We will not do anything that will harm Israel's security, but if there is a possibility of finding a mechanism that will lead to the release of hostages - including the bodies of the murdered - and to an end to the war in a way that will lead Gaza to a future of peace, prosperity and without Hamas - we will examine it.".
He noted that there has been diplomatic progress on the issue, but emphasized: "There are still obstacles.".
When asked about the differences of opinion between the American administration and Israel, Rubio made it clear that the two countries share a single goal - the elimination of Hamas: "There can be no future of peace and prosperity in Gaza as long as Hamas rules there by force. If there is even one ember left of them, it will rekindle the fire. This is a basic truth. This is why Israel will continue its operations as long as a full agreement is not reached.".
