Following serious cases of measles infection and fears of a widespread spread in the city, the rabbis of Modi'in Illit published a letter calling on the public to "hurry up and get vaccinated against the disease and vaccinate their children."
The bulk of the measles outbreak is in three Haredi concentrations, with as of yesterday: 14 infected people from Modi'in Illit, 8 from Jerusalem, and 8 from Bnei Brak.
According to data from the Ministry of Health, as of today there are approximately 350,000 children under the age of 10 in Israel who are not vaccinated - 100,000 of them in the ultra-Orthodox community.
The letter is being issued by the Haredi Authority and the Ministry of Health, which are currently working to increase awareness of the danger and provide accessible and tailored information to the Haredi public on the subject of vaccination.
However, even though the outbreak among the ultra-Orthodox community occurred about a month ago, the Ministry of Health has not yet launched an advertising campaign for the ultra-Orthodox community.
In their letter, the rabbis warn of the danger posed by the measles outbreak, especially among children and adults in at-risk groups, and mentioned the commandment “and you shall be very careful for your souls” as a halachic obligation to act to prevent danger.
