theRescue from Syria: The Saudi Al-Arabiya channel revealed today (Sunday) new details about the operation to recover the body of armored fighter Lt. Col. Zvi Feldman, who fell in the Battle of Sultan Yaakov in the First Lebanon War - and has since been declared missing.
According to the report, the body was found in the cemetery of the Yarmouk refugee camp, south of Damascus - and that only five people were aware of the exact location of the grave.
It was also reported that the opportunity to act arose after the collapse of the Assad regime in the region. During the operation, four possible graves were identified and searches were conducted to locate Feldman's remains.
The remains were transferred to Israel about a month and a half ago, but the official announcement of the identification of the body was delayed due to difficulties in verifying the DNA data, due to the advanced decomposition of the bones.
According to reports, the armor suit found in the field proved beyond a doubt that it was a deer - and the body was then recovered. After the body was recovered, it was identified at the Military Rabbinate's Genomic Center for the Identification of Fallen.
It was also reported that work is continuing to identify additional remains to check whether they have a connection to Israeli spy Eli Cohen. This follows new intelligence information received regarding the burial place of Israeli spy Eli Cohen, who acted on behalf of the Mossad in Damascus, was captured and executed by hanging by the Syrians in 1965.
According to the Saudi channel, an Israeli commando force took part in the operation along with local militants. Contrary to the Arab report about commando fighters operating in the operation, Israel claims that this was a non-Israeli force, but rather “Mossad assets” – local elements operating on Israel’s behalf – who risked their lives to reach a place that was under armed guard.
His funeral is expected to take place tomorrow at 5:00 PM in Holon.
