The head of the US Senate Intelligence Committee, Republican Senator Tom Cotton, commented on the High Court's decision not to confirm the dismissal of Shin Bet head Ronen Bar, and criticized the move.

Cotton issued a statement: "It is not a 'threat to democracy' that an elected head of state would have the authority to dismiss the head of the intelligence services - that is the essence of democracy.".

"If Prime Minister Netanyahu has lost trust in this intelligence chief, how can the United States government continue to trust him?".

The remarks are made against the backdrop of the political and legal controversy in Israel surrounding the Prime Minister's decision to dismiss Shin Bet head Ronen Bar, who does not enjoy Netanyahu's trust.
