Yaakov Wider, a member of the Bnei Brak City Council representing the Likud, submitted a motion today (Monday) to cancel the height restriction on residential construction in Bnei Brak.

Wieder wrote in his proposal: "This will inevitably lead to an improvement in housing needs and prices in the city, which is one of the most crowded in Israel.".

In his proposal, Vider writes: "The 'halachic' claims that activists repeatedly bring up on a variety of issues in order to 'educate' the public and impose their whims on it also turn out to be false in this case, as the Rishon LeZion, Rabbi David Yosef Shlita, ruled, who wrote that halachically, 'there is no impediment to approving construction plans for high-rise residential buildings and we are powerless to prevent such a thing.'".

Wider proposes to accept the ruling of the Rishon LeZion, and to abolish the restrictions on building height in the city, as is customary in all cities in Israel.

Currently, the Bnei Brak municipality limits residential construction to a height of only 6.5 stories. Wider's proposal, which will be put to a vote in the city council, will test the representatives of United Torah Judaism, and in particular the representatives of Shas - who will have a hard time voting against the Rishon LeZion.

Vider said in response to 'Haredim 10': "The city's best interest is to alleviate the housing shortage as much as possible, and I am convinced that those who claim to be representatives of the rabbis will not vote against an explicit ruling by the Chief Justice.".
