The High Court of Justice announced this afternoon (Friday) that it has frozen the government's decision to terminate the term of Shin Bet head Ronen Bar - pending a hearing on a petition filed on the subject.

The decision states: "A temporary order is hereby issued whereby the validity of the decision will be suspended until another decision is issued.".

This means that the head of the Shin Bet will continue to serve in his position at this stage, until a judicial decision is made.

The date for hearing the petition has not yet been set.

Communications Minister Dr. Shlomo Kari sharply attacked the High Court's decision and stated that the court has no authority to intervene in the government's decision.

In a direct address to Judge Dafna Kanfi-Steinitz, Kari said: "Ronen Bar will end his term on April 10 or earlier with the appointment of a permanent Shin Bet head. You have no legal authority to interfere in this. This is the government's authority and hers alone. Your order is invalid.".

He added: "The story is over. The people are the sovereign.".

Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich responded to the High Court's decision: "High Court judges will not conduct the war and will not determine its commanders. Period.".

The High Court's decision comes after a series of harsh statements by government ministers calling for the dismissal of the head of the Shin Bet, in light of the failures of the swearing-in ceremony in October and the tension between the political echelon and the General Security Service.
