The Tehran prosecutor's office filed an indictment last night (Monday) against political commentator and intellectual, Professor Sadeq Zibachlam, for what they called his "unfounded statements." According to a report by Yoav Zahavi in Kan News, Professor Zibachlam is an academic and is considered a well-known commentator in Iran and abroad. More than a million people follow his Instagram account. In 2016, he gained publicity after refusing to step on the Israeli and US flags painted on the floor at the entrance to Azad University in the city of Mashhad. A report by the Iranian news agency Mizan, which is affiliated with the judiciary in Iran, does not make any clear reference to those "statements" made by Zibachlam, but yesterday the Iranian political commentator claimed at a conference in Qatar that the Iranian people's hatred of the Palestinians has grown since October 7 - and that "many young people in the country admire Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu." Prof. Zibakhalam made the remarks at an academic conference at the Center for Iranian Studies in Qatar, describing the revulsion that young Iranians have felt toward the Palestinians since October 7: 'It’s true, we’re used to seeing demonstrations in support of Hamas and Hezbollah across Iran, but these are demonstrations organized by the regime. Beneath the surface, things seem to be changing. And it doesn’t just end with the Palestinians," he said. He explained: "It’s hard to believe how many Iranians hate the Palestinians. Where has our sympathy gone? It’s simply faded, evaporated. If someone had told me that one day Iranians would hate the Palestinians and instead praise Netanyahu, see him as a hero – I would have been sure they would have gone crazy.' The professor added: "I have seen it with my own eyes over the past 15 months, the level of hatred for Palestinians among young people in Iran. And the hero is Netanyahu. Do you think they know anything about Netanyahu, the Likud party or Hamas? No, no. They hate the Palestinians because the Palestinian leaders support them." The Iranian news agency noted in the report that Zibakhalam had previously been sentenced to 18 months in prison and was banned from political activity for two years for "propaganda" against the regime. The report also noted that in another case he was sentenced to a year in prison after publishing "false materials," and in a third case he was sentenced to six months in prison for "publishing false information." He appealed to the Supreme Court but his appeal was rejected. He is currently on leave from prison due to his health.
