The Israeli Internet Association is warning the public this morning (Sunday) about a wave of scams being carried out using the WhatsApp application.

The messages often include allegations of violations of Facebook policies, demanding that you click on a link and fill out details as a condition for releasing the account. The scammers provide links that lead to websites impersonating Facebook, Instagram, or WhatsApp.

The purpose of the scam is to steal users' personal identification information, such as usernames and passwords for various accounts, And in more serious cases - the credit card details associated with them.

The union said that dozens of inquiries have been received over the past few days, and called on the public to be cautious and avoid clicking on suspicious links or providing personal information via WhatsApp messages.

Yonatan Ben Horin, director of the Safe Internet Helpline at the Israeli Internet Association: "In the current wave, we see that scammers are contacting via WhatsApp messages from numbers with prefixes from Vietnam and Finland.

"However, it is important to know that even if the message comes from numbers with prefixes that seem more reliable, such as Israel or the US, these are scammers and not an official entity."
