They no longer speak the same language: A parrot that disappeared from its California home has been reunited with its owner after 4 years, but they no longer speak English. The reason: The parrot has switched to speaking Spanish.
This strange story, which was reported on the Sky News website, belongs to Erin Chick, a British man who lives in the city of Torrance, California, USA, and his pet African parrot named Nigel. Over the years, they would talk to each other, and Nigel, who spoke fluent English, had a distinctly British accent like his owner.
About 4 years ago, the parrot disappeared and was found by a veterinarian named Teresa Miko who came across an ad from a person who had found a parrot, and she, who also knew Chick, brokered the deal over the years.
When Chick arrived to pick up the parrot, tears welled up in his eyes, even though the parrot tried to bite him. The bigger surprise came when the birds arrived at the house. Chick tried to speak to Nigel, but Nigel replied in fluent Spanish.
""The biggest mystery is how Nigel switched to speaking Spanish," says Chick, since the person who found the parrot is American. "On the other hand, we don't know where he was for the entire four years." Did the parrot stay with a Spanish immigrant who doesn't speak English, or did he fly to Spain and then return to the United States? Only Nigel knows the answer, only he says it in Spanish.
