Heritage Minister Amichai Eliyahu of Otzma Yehudit is calling today (Wednesday) for the resignation of Shin Bet head Ronen Bar due to Hamas' attack on Israel on October 7 - and the failure last night, when hundreds breached security fences near the Prime Minister's house in Jerusalem.
In the government WhatsApp group, Eliyahu wrote: "Whoever failed and is clearly to blame for the security disaster of the Second Assembly. Whoever allowed last night's failure to breach the security envelope at the Prime Minister's residence should leave his position, certainly not appoint people in the image of his failure."
He added: "When we speak, the responsibility expected of us, the taking of our responsibility - members of the Israeli government. The main demand from us is to change the perception of the security systems so that we can live here in security."
Minister Eliyahu was referring to the end of a report in Kan News that Bar intends to make a large-scale round of appointments in the organization immediately after the month of Ramadan. "If we continue to ignore the failure to make appointments, we will not be able to wash our hands clean."
Minister of Immigration and Absorption Ofir Sofer replied: "We are in a sensitive period and even just disputes have a way of being handled. If we don't act like this, we will fall apart. What we see on the streets should not create an atmosphere of 'let's go to war,' quite the opposite. And if there is war, then we should really remember who we are at war with."
Last night, a particularly violent demonstration took place near the Prime Minister's House. Five people were arrested during the demonstrations, and one police officer was injured by an iron fence thrown at him by a protester. The police have opened an investigation after a protester threw a burning torch at a police officer.
The demonstration, which escalated, provoked reactions from ministers and members of Knesset.
The head of the Shin Bet also expressed himself unusually: "There is a clear line between legitimate protest and violent and illegal protest. This is a worrying trend that could lead to dangerous areas that are forbidden to reach."
