The Awakening movement decided to support Rabbi Chaim Amsalem in the race for the position of Chief Sephardic Rabbi of Jerusalem.
""The choice was made based on conversations that members of the city council held with him on behalf of the movement, and led to the impression that he was the most suitable person to sit in the chair of the city's mayor," the movement said.
The movement added that the decision "is in line with the movement's election platform for advancing the moderate Haredi rabbinate. Rabbi Chaim Amsalem is a person who combines in his opinions and actions responsibility towards all sectors of the city, courage and a call for the Haredi public to combine their Torah with integration into society and the workforce.".
Meanwhile, it appears that not all members of the Jewish Home Center are happy with their party's support for the leader of the party, Rabbi Amar. Several members have begun organizing a petition against the "deal" for the election of Rabbis Stern-Amar, calling for support for Rabbi Chaim Amsalem.
""I find it very puzzling that Rabbi Amar has become the representative of religious Zionism. They did something that should not be done. Rabbi Amsalem is the most deserving of the candidates and it should be clear that the position of the members of the center is different from the position of the Jewish Home," says party center member Neria Knafo, organizer of the petition, to the 'Kippa' website.
Rabbi Avraham Zimmering was also quoted in the article as saying similar things. "Rabbi Amsalem communicates with the general public much better than Rabbi Amar. The majority of the public is not Haredi and needs to speak in the language of the people. ""I'm not sure Rabbi Amar would know how to speak this language. The Chief Rabbi is a person whose job is to help the weaker sections and I don't think Rabbi Amar is suitable for that.".
