Ben Gurion Airport customs employees at the Tax Authority, in cooperation with the Crime Prevention Unit at Ben Gurion Airport, thwarted an attempt to smuggle 173 iPhone mobile phones, worth an estimated 700,000 shekels, while evading payment of import taxes worth approximately 130,000 shekels.

A couple from Beer Sheva were arrested today (Tuesday) at the airport on suspicion of attempting to smuggle mobile phones, after the wife of the couple tried to pass through the green lane, designated for passengers who do not have products that require a customs declaration, while in possession of a suitcase and a baby stroller with a baby inside.

The passenger aroused the suspicion of the baggage hall screeners, who asked her to place her suitcase in the scanner. During the inspection of the suitcase and the baby stroller, the mobile phones were discovered.

Following the discovery of the mobile phones, the passenger was detained for questioning, and at the same time, investigators from the Ben Gurion Airport Narcotics and Customs Unit - Ben Gurion Airport Customs and Border Protection Unit - detained her husband, who was located while waiting for her in the passenger hall.

Later in the day, the two were brought before a magistrate's court judge in Rishon LeZion and released under restrictive conditions.
