The battle over the budget: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the controversy surrounding the defense budget this evening (Sunday), saying that it must be increased.
In a speech he gave at the International Cyber Conference, held at Tel Aviv University, Netanyahu said that billions are needed to add to the defense budget. However, he emphasized that he opposes increasing the deficit, contrary to the position of Finance Minister Yair Lapid.
""We need money for Iron Domes," Netanyahu said, "money to confront ISIS in the east, Hezbollah and al-Qaeda in the north, and Hamas in the south.".
He said, "The billions we decided to invest in security saved Israel's economy. We invested billions in thousands of Iron Dome interceptors that helped the economy continue to function in the last campaign.".
""The billions we invested in the fence in the south completely stopped the infiltration into Israel, including by jihadists from Sinai. I remember there was criticism of our 'excessive' investment in security, but I don't want to think about what would have happened if we hadn't invested in it.".
""In light of the threats in our region, we need a significant increase of many billions," Netanyahu claimed, adding, "This must be done in a responsible manner and not deteriorate Israel with an uncontrollable deficit and an international overdraft that is getting out of control.".
Netanyahu also referred to the letter of refusals from graduates of Unit 8200, saying: "Reluctance of any kind is fully condemnable. The political use that has been made recently while making unfounded accusations is unacceptable. The IDF, with all its units, is the most moral army in the world. From my many years of acquaintance with the members of Unit 8200, I know that the baseless slanders that have been made recently will not harm such an important work.".
