Shortly before Obama announces the formation of a coalition against ISIS, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened a special discussion this evening (Wednesday) on the threat posed by the "Islamic State" (ISIS).
The discussion was attended by ministers Tzipi Livni and Yitzhak Aharonovitch, Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein, and a representative of the Shin Bet.
In recent days, the Minister of Public Security warned that there is a certain identification with ISIS in Israel. As a result, discussions are taking place at the meeting on steps that could thwart the possibility of establishing ISIS cells in Israel, acts of identification with the organization, or even assistance to it.
When the video of the murder of American-Israeli journalist Steven Sotloff was released last week, Netanyahu said that his execution was carried out "because he was, for these murderous terrorists, a symbol of the West - the same culture that radical Islam seeks to destroy." The prime minister added: "Many in the world understand better today than before that the threats to Israel are the same threats to them, and those who do not stop these threats at their source will eventually find them in their own homes.".
In his speech tonight, Obama is expected to address the Sunni organization that has managed to take over large parts of Iraq and Syria. Obama will not announce a ground invasion of Iraq, but he will likely detail how to arm the rebel organizations in Syria that are fighting ISIS.
US Secretary of State Kerry said: "When the world hears what President Obama has to say tonight, he will come away with specific insights into what the strategy will be against ISIS.".
