Another blatant violation of the status quo in Jerusalem prompted Shas faction chairwoman Nati Lasri to address Attorney Amnon Merhav, Director General of the Jerusalem Municipality, with an official request this morning (Tuesday):
""I was shocked to wake up this morning to hateful and disgusting advertisements that severely offend the majority of Jerusalem residents, appearing on the billboards of a show.
I am confident that your great sensitivity and responsibility towards the city's residents and their representatives on the City Council will lead to an urgent investigation into these unfortunate circumstances, when in the concentrations of the ultra-Orthodox neighborhoods leading from and to it (such as Begin Road and Ramot Road) an advertisement was placed that provides fuel for extremists who would like to set the city on fire, while blatantly violating the status quo and sensitivity to the basic needs of the city's residents, which has always been the case.
"My friend Amnon, I would ask you to address this issue urgently and order the removal of these signs from the streets of Jerusalem, including examining and making decisions in the municipal signage committee on this issue.".
United Torah Judaism faction chairman Eliezer Rauchberger added his request to "act as soon as possible to remove these offensive publications immediately.".
In a conversation with Haredim10, he says: "This is yet another attack on the sanctity of Jerusalem... The neglect regarding the feelings and values of the city's traditional and Haredim residents and residents alike is increasing in deliberate obscurity... Anyone who ignores the observance of Shabbat and the state of mixed neighborhoods will wake up this morning in Haredi neighborhoods to a terrible break-in that every child from Haidar or Avrech Kolel encounters.".
Lasri's approach differs from that of the other members of his faction, who are "aligning" with the mayor. Some say that they are doing this on the orders of Shas Chairman Aryeh Deri, who prefers to support Barkat and gain his support for the Shas candidate for Chief Rabbinate, while allowing the possibility of vetoing a Sephardic candidate. This claim has no official confirmation from Deri's office.
