Minister Orna Barbibai said that bread prices will increase by 20%, but today (Thursday) it becomes clear: the price jump will be much higher - and for families in need today will be much harder. According to the announcement of the Joint Price Committee of the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the price increase stems from an update of the input basket and is mainly affected by a cumulative increase in flour prices. Here are the new prices: 500-gram challah, which currently costs 5.17 shekels, will increase by 21% to 6.26 shekels; 750-gram whole-wheat bread, which currently costs 5.12 shekels, will increase by 36% to 6.96 shekels; 750-gram sliced whole-wheat bread, which currently costs 7.11 shekels, will increase to 7.91 shekels - an increase of 11%; A 750-gram loaf of white bread, which currently costs 5.12 shekels, will increase in price to 6.97 shekels. According to the Ministry of Economy, "the price increase stems from an update of the input basket and is mainly affected by a cumulative increase in flour prices. A significant component in bread production and is affected by wheat prices worldwide." Wheat prices are rising worldwide because of the war in Ukraine. This is after Russia imposed a naval blockade on Ukraine and it cannot export grain by sea. Ukraine is one of the world's largest wheat exporters, which is creating a global shortage.
