The bill known as the 'Barkat Law' passed the Ministerial Committee for Legislative Affairs for preliminary reading today (Monday) and received the support of the coalition.
According to a report by Dafna Liel on Channel 12, the ministerial committee emphasized that the law should be clarified and therefore requested that it be returned to it before the first reading.
Minister Pnina Tamano-Shata demanded that the vote be postponed, and since her request was not granted, she voted against it. Justice Minister Saar proposed establishing a team of ministers headed by him to accompany the legislative process.
After the law was approved by the Ministerial Committee, the Likud faction meeting was canceled.
The official reason given to members: concerns about the coronavirus outbreak. However, faction sources estimate that the real reason is an attempt to escape an intra-faction decision regarding the law, submitted by MK David Amsalem, and thus avoid friction within the faction.
MK Dudi Amsalem initiated the 'Barkat Law' - with the aim of ensuring that there is no political advantage for a wealthy candidate. This is an amendment to the Political Parties Law, which is intended to limit the amount of donations raised by an elected official for political activity to a maximum of 100,000 shekels per year.
There is evidence of support for this proposal in the Likud, as Nir Barkat is marked as one of Netanyahu's potential heirs, and is investing a lot of money in the race for Likud leadership.
