Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Twitter account was "briefly hacked" on Sunday, his office said. Modi's account, which has more than 73 million followers, posted a tweet after midnight announcing that India had officially adopted Bitcoin as legal tender, and that the government had bought 500 Bitcoins - equivalent to $24 million - and was planning to distribute them among residents. It also included a link to a blog on the subject. According to a report on News 12, the tweet was quickly deleted, and the Prime Minister's Office said that Modi's account was fully secured and that any tweets that appeared at the time of the hack should be ignored. The announcement was reportedly suspicious because at the end of last month, India's Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman declared that the government would not recognize Bitcoin as the country's currency. This is the second time in less than two years that Modi's account has been hacked.
