Kahana to the Chief Rabbis: Reformers? We are aware of the contempt of Rabbis Stern and Stav

Minister of Religious Services Matan Kahane sent a letter today (Wednesday) to the Chief Rabbis of Israel, Rabbis Lau and Yosef, and to members of the Chief Rabbinate Council - following an attack by the Rabbi of the city of Nesher, Rabbi Yitzhak Levy, against Rabbis Aryeh Stern and David Stav - and called on them to "condemn it out loud and issue a clear call to protect the dignity of Torah scholars.". This follows comments he wrote in the weekly Parashat Shavuot newsletter, edited by Rabbi Levi, who also serves as a member of the Chief Rabbinate Council.

Rabbi Levy referred to what the Gaon Rabbi David Cohen, Rosh Yeshiva of Hebron, wrote, according to which "in the past they wanted to bring truly Reform rabbis to the Chief Rabbinate and the Rabbinate of Jerusalem, and Maran (the late Rabbi Zetzul) fought for this with dedication...".

רב העיר נשר כתב הערה לפיה: "כוונת הגאון שליט"א לדיל שנעשה בתשע"ג עם ד. סתיו בתמיכת ליברמן ובנט. וכן לדיל שנעשה בתשע"ה עם הרב שטרן בתמיכת מר בנט והושיבו על כסא הגרצ"פ פראנק זצ"ל – רב שכתב שאין צריך שגר יקבל את כל המצווות". השר כתב לרבנים הראשיים ולחברי המועצה: "לצערי הרב, בעלון אותו עורך הרב יצחק לוי - רב העיר נשר וחבר מועצת הרבנות הראשית - נכתבו בהערה על דבריו של הרב דוד כהן ראש ישיבת חברון דברים חמורים וקשים הנכללים תחת ביזוי כבוד תלמידי חכמים. לאור חומרתם - איני יכול לעמוד מנגד. אבקש למחות ולכאוב על ביזוי כבוד תלמידי חכמים: השמטת התואר רב מהרב דוד סתיו שליט"א וקריאה בשם 'רפורמים' – לו ולגאון הרב אריה שטרן שליט"א. אני פונה לכת"ר לגנות את הדברים בפה מלא ולצאת בקריאה ברורה לשמור על כבודם של תלמידי חכמים. לא יתכן כי יפורסמו דברים קשים וחמורים מעין אלה על רבנים ותלמידי חכמים בישראל כלאחר יד", כתב כהנא לרבנים.
