Passover, poverty, and compassion: MK Yisrael Eichler submitted a bill to double child allowances ahead of the holidays of Nissan and the month of Tishrei.
In his explanatory remarks, the Knesset member wrote: "In light of the increase in the dimensions of poverty that harms children's nutrition, the cut in children's allowances should be corrected, at least during the holiday months of Passover and Sukkot, and therefore the amount paid during those months should be doubled, thereby making things a little easier for Israeli children. Instead of 140 NIS per child, an allowance of 280 NIS per child will be granted during these two months.".
The rationale behind the proposal, according to Eichler, is based on data from the poverty report published a few days ago. "After the shocking report on the million poor and their children and the millions of Jews with incomes whose high cost of living and taxes make them needy, we must save the poor children of Israel.".
Eichler also accompanied the submission of the proposal with an accusation against the government, which he calls "the malicious government that starves children as an economic weapon, in its war against the Jewish birthrate.".
Does the proposal have any chance of passing? Not really.
