The Lachish Marine Police officers, who were conducting a routine patrol last weekend off the coast of Ashdod, noticed from a distance a kayak that was drifting dangerously in the sea. The officers approached the kayak and noticed that there were two children about 11 years old on it, without water and without means of communication, unable to resist the currents of the water that were sweeping them towards the breakwater - and were a very short distance from it, a situation that was endangering their lives. The officers threw a lifeline at them and pulled them to safety, where they met their grandfather who was in another kayak a great distance from them. The officers explained to him the importance of having an adult with the children in order to prevent dangerous drifting and to stock up on water. Lt. Col. Ilan Kahane, Commander of the Lachish Marine Police: "The summer season has begun and with it we are noticing many families who visit the beaches and the sea, some of whom arrive with various boats. It is important to remember that the sea is a potentially dangerous and unpredictable place, so always make sure when you go out to sea that you are with a properly trained person, that you have water, sun protection, and a means of communication through which, in the event of an emergency, you can call us with a short call to the 100 hotline.".
