Animals with unusual colors mostly belong to the realm of imagination, familiar to us mainly from science fiction films, but for Aida and Aldo Molina, from Spain, it was a completely realistic experience.
Molina's story was reported on the wtf website and the website of the Spanish newspaper lagunaaldia: Molina is a dog breeder who lives in the Valladolid province of Spain and, together with her father, makes a living by breeding dogs. One day, one of her dogs gave birth to several puppies, and Molina, who helped with the litter, was surprised to discover that two puppies, a male and a female, had green fur.
""At first I thought it was dirt, and I tried to rub it off, but when I saw that the color didn't come off, I realized that it wasn't dirt that came off," she said. Shortly after the birth, the female died, but the male is still alive and getting stronger.
Local veterinarian Daniel Valverde was called to Molina's home and said he had never encountered anything like this before. He contacted scientists at the University of Madrid to help him investigate the case.
According to historical tests, it turned out that in 2012 a similar case occurred in England, when a Labrador puppy was born with green fur – the only one of seven puppies born with 'normal' golden fur.
A thorough examination revealed that the British mother dog was exposed during her pregnancy to a substance called bilibidine, which is a green pigment that develops in the gallbladder. Is this also the case in Spain? The puppies are still undergoing a series of tests.
