According to a report by Barak Ravid in Walla, Erdan was specially summoned from New York for a one-on-one meeting with Netanyahu, in light of the expected changes in government in the US. Political sources say that Netanyahu, who is interested in starting work with the Biden administration on the right foot, wants to appoint a full-time ambassador to Washington, after the end of Ron Dermer's term. Erdan was promised after the government was formed that he would serve as ambassador to the UN for a period of time and then serve concurrently as Israel's ambassador to Washington. Also, since the government has already approved Erdan's tenure in both positions, in order to change the identity of the ambassador in Washington, a new government resolution must be passed. Netanyahu wants to send a trusted person close to him to Washington, as he did with Ron Dermer.
According to the report, the main candidate for the position is Minister Yuval Steinitz. According to estimates, the Prime Minister will explain to Erdan why the division is necessary and ask him to choose one of the positions - ambassador to the UN or ambassador to Washington, with the other remaining position being given to Steinitz. The Prime Minister's Office denied the allegations: "Netanyahu does not want Erdan to give up the position in Washington and there is no change in his situation.".
