An El Al Dreamliner (787) took off from Beijing Airport this evening (Sunday) carrying 900,000 surgical masks, half a million protective suits for medical teams, and other essential equipment.
The extensive procurement operation in China was led by Deputy Director General of the Ministry of Defense Avi Dadon through the establishment of a "bridgehead" in China who would purchase essential medical equipment, according to the requirements of the Ministry of Health and through ICL and its representatives in China.
In addition, ventilators and a large amount of other equipment raised by the Foreign Ministry and the Israeli Embassy in China from donors will be flown to Israel in the coming days.
For the purpose of operating the air train, the International Transportation Unit at the Ministry of Defense's National Air Transport Command has recruited El Al, which, as mentioned, will take delivery of 11 Dreamliner (787) aircraft that have been trained to fly cargo in the coming days.
The first plane will land at Ben Gurion Airport early tomorrow morning. El Al will operate two flights a day for about a week - until the operation is completed.
The air train was made possible thanks to an extensive diplomatic effort by the Foreign Ministry, led by Israeli Ambassador to China Zvi Hefetz and the consulate in Shanghai.
