The French Interior Minister announced that he will ban anti-Semitic pro-Palestinian demonstrations in Paris.
Leading French newspaper Le Figaro reports that the minister noted that although expressing an opinion is legitimate, it is unbearable to see hate demonstrations against synagogues and Jewish-owned businesses.
The interior minister added that these were deliberate demonstrations. No one went to protest against the Syrian embassy for killing hundreds of thousands of Muslims. "We are in control of the situation, and the method for dealing with events of this type is to stand firm," said the minister, who also serves as agriculture minister. "This is a challenge to the values of the republic," he added.
On Saturday, a mass demonstration was held in which pro-Palestinian protesters vandalized Jewish stores.
The protesters attacked cars and clashed with the police. So far, the police have arrested 80 protesters.
The French president called on the French people to exercise restraint and not let world events affect life in France. Hollande acknowledged that anti-Semitism exists in France – the country with the largest Muslim population in Europe.
