Deputy Speaker of the Knesset, MK Nava Boker, commented this evening (Monday), while chairing the plenary debate, on MK Yael Cohen Paran from the Zionist Camp for speaking from the podium while wearing a sleeveless shirt.

Cohen-Paren was furious with Boker and a commotion developed in the plenary.

Cohen Faran later said: "Knesset Speaker Nava Boker got confused and thought that the Knesset Speaker's podium was the main checkout counter at H&M. She saw fit to call in the modesty police and tell me that my dress was disrespectful and revealing."

"Ms. Boker, you have no right to dictate style and modesty. I have the right to dress however I choose. And one more thing - even Knesset members can appear in dresses. Go ahead."

MK Michal Rozin of Meretz was furious: "Audacity. Another poor attempt to police a woman's body. What right does she have to comment on another Knesset member's clothing?"

The one who came out to defend Boker was MK Bezalel Smotrich: "Michal, this is pathetic. Not everything has to do with women and men. A respectable dress code is a matter for both men and women and is not related to 'policing a woman's body.' It has to do with the respect of the Knesset and the public. Certainly when the comment came from a woman... I assume that if I had gone up to the podium with my shirt on, I would have been commented on too, and it would not have been related to 'policing a man's body.'"
