The coalition is establishing a special committee in the Knesset to approve the new conscription law.
According to a report by Matti Tochfeld in Israel Today, the special committee was supposed to be headed by MK David Bitan, the former coalition chairman, who has lowered his profile in recent months and has not been involved in politics in any significant way since the investigations opened against him.
MK Bitan, who began the current term as the coalition chairman and was one of the most powerful and influential people in the government, was forced to leave his position and, in effect, his political activities following the investigations opened against him.
However, following the publication, members of the Haredi factions demanded that the current coalition chairman, David Amsalem, and not David Bitan, head the committee on the draft law.
Indeed, according to a report by Dafna Liel from News 2, Bitan's comeback will have to wait a little longer: Coalition Chairman David Amsalem will head the committee.
The joint committee for examining the recruitment of members of the Haredi public, the Ministry of Defense and the IDF, recommended, among other things: setting new recruitment targets for the IDF and national service, a gradual annual increase in the number of those serving, significant financial sanctions on yeshivahs for failing to meet recruitment targets, and promoting benefits and rewards for all those serving.
The recommendations do not include criminal sanctions against those who do not enlist.
