November 30th is the day on which the State of Israel will annually mark the national day commemorating the departure and expulsion of Jews from Arab countries and Iran.
The new national day was approved as a bill that passed second and third readings, by MK Shimon Ohayon of Yisrael Beiteinu, chairman of the lobby for Jewish refugees from Arab countries.
The state will mark the day through a national ceremony, a special day in the Knesset, activities in schools, and mentions and actions by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in international aspects.
MK Ohayon welcomed the passage of the law, saying: "For many years, Israel ignored the history of the Jews of Arab countries and Iran and neglected their story. Today, we have corrected a historical injustice. Starting this year, every child in Israel will learn and become familiar with a tragic chapter in Jewish history.".
Ohayon explained that too few people in Israel know about the issue, and even fewer people in the world. According to him, many are unaware that Jews underwent ethnic cleansing, persecution, and pogroms in the Arab world.
""850,000 Jews left behind a great deal of property and possessions, double the number of Palestinians who left their homes in Israel in '48. Those Jews were not involved in the conflict or war and were harmed solely because they were Jews. When talking about a peace agreement, a first and important step on the part of the Arab world should be to accept responsibility for what was done to these ancient Jewish communities.".
