Is this what will deter terrorists from future kidnapping attacks? MK Motti Yogev, along with a group of MKs, submitted a bill today that would increase the punishment for nationalist kidnappers from 20 years to life imprisonment.
In the explanatory memorandum to the bill, the initiators wrote:
""In light of the kidnapping of the three boys and the prevention of approximately 30 more kidnappings by the Shin Bet and security forces, which were planned to be carried out by terrorist organizations, it is necessary to strengthen Israel's deterrence.".
MK Yogev, a lieutenant colonel in the reserves and chairman of the Subcommittee on Judea and Samaria Affairs of the Foreign Affairs and Security Committee, explained that one of the important questions we need to ask is where the audacity of the terrorists in Judea and Samaria comes from? According to him, "all those released in the Shalit deal should be returned to prison and the punishment of the kidnappers should be made stricter. The only thing that will stop terrorism is the deterrent power of the IDF and the security establishment.".
The law was also signed by MKs Zevulun Kalfa, Yoni Shtavun, and Finance Committee Chairman Slominsky. Kalfa said that "in order to prevent the next kidnapping, Israel must restore its deterrent power, among other things, by toughening the punishment for terrorists. The State of Israel must stop the revolving door system and ensure that kidnapping for bargaining purposes does not pay off.".
Stevon noted that terrorism is 'raising its head' and must be curbed in every way and with the greatest force. He added that "restoring our deterrence is an existential urgency, and all tools are available. A terrorist who kidnapped an Israeli and deprived him of his freedom deserves no less than life imprisonment. An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth - we have no other way.".
Life imprisonment will include a restriction that does not allow for pardon, Slominski states, "Anyone who even thinks about kidnapping must know that he will be sentenced to life imprisonment and spend the rest of his life in prison without the possibility of pardon.""
