Reuven Rivlin elected as the new President of the State of Israel

Reuven Rivlin is the elected president of the State of Israel, Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein announced this afternoon. Rivlin's victory was achieved in the second round in which he ran against MK Meir Sheetrit, and he defeated him by a margin of 10 votes - 63 in favor of Rivlin and 53 for Sheetrit.

  Rivlin will take office in place of incumbent President Shimon Peres on July 28, at the end of the latter's seven-year term.

In his first speech (see separate article) after his election, in Chagall Hall, He congratulated all the candidates and his opponent in the second round, Meir Sheetrit, saying: "Wow, what a fight you gave!""

The presidential race ended after weeks of an election campaign marked by mutual slander, assassination attempts, and anonymous slander. After the victory, Gideon Sa'ar, who was one of the main activists for Rivlin's election, said that the Likud will have to take stock of how some party members did not support the National Camp candidate.

The C.The first round ended with the following results: Reuven Rivlin received 44 votes, Meir Sheetrit 31, Dalia Itzik 28, Dalia Dorner, 13 votes, and Dan Shechtman one vote. 

MK Moshe Gafni said after the results were announced: "If the Haredi were together with the Likud, the elections would have been decided in the first round. The ones who decided the second round were the Haredi parties.".

The polls opened at 11:00, and 119 Knesset members - Meir Porush of United Torah Judaism is abroad - cast their votes in a secret ballot for one of the five candidates - MK Reuven Rivlin, MK Meir Sheetrit, former Knesset Speaker Dalia Itzik, retired Supreme Court Justice Dalia Dorner, and Nobel Prize laureate Prof. Dan Shechtman. 

The political aspect

The struggle in the second round focused on the votes of the Haredi Knesset members, as a significant portion of them voted in the first round for candidate Dalia Itzik. Apparently, they all voted in favor of Rubi Rivlin.

On the other side, MK Amir Peretz and Labor Party Chairman Yitzhak Herzog joined forces and tried to promote the candidacy of Meir Sheetrit. The votes were estimated to be divided as follows: A significant portion of the Likud movement voted for Rubi Rivlin. Half of the votes from the Yisrael Beiteinu party voted for Rivlin. Two Knesset members from the Labor Party [Yachimowitz, Rosenthal] and one MK from the Meretz movement [Gileon].

Sheetrit was supported by the majority of the Yesh Atid party, where Minister Meir Cohen made a significant effort to mobilize his members in favor of Sheetrit, who is also his brother-in-law, the Labor Party, the Arab factions, and the Meretz faction.

The Likud party expressed great disappointment that members of the movement did not rally in favor of Rivlin, and Gideon Sa'ar even said that they, as a movement, must conduct internal soul-searching.

 Current updates:

• During the vote, Meir Sheetrit approached Reuven Rivlin and told him: "I win." Rivlin responded: "I tend to agree.".

• The second round of the Knesset presidential elections between Reuven Rivlin and Meir Sheetrit has ended. MK Yitzhak Cohen, chairman of the ballot committee, and members of the ballot committee will count the votes in the next hour. 119 MKs participated in the vote. MK Meir Porush, who is abroad, did not participate in the vote.

• During the vote, MK Meir Shitrit approached Reuven Rivlin and the two embraced and kissed warmly. The two also took a photo together at the request of MK Miri Regev, who took a photo of them on her cell phone.

• Testimony in the Knesset: Netanyahu and Deri are working for Sheetrit.

• Aryeh Deri estimates that half of Shas will vote for Sherit.

• United Torah Judaism will vote for Rivlin. Degel will also vote for Rubi Rivlin after the Grand National Assembly ordered to vote for the candidate closer to religion. Shitrit was part of the front during the period when it fought religion.

• In Shas, there is freedom of voting, after Gideon Sa'ar tried to convince Rivlin to vote. However, it appears that all MKs will vote for Rivlin.

• The Shas faction is meeting to decide who to support. Its votes may decide who wins.

• MK Basel Ghattas from the Balad faction revealed that most of the Arab factions chose Meir Sheetrit, after a meeting held yesterday. He estimates that Sheetrit will advance to the second round and that his chances of defeating Rubi Rivlin are real.
