The Speaker of the Knesset decided today (Sunday) after consulting with the Knesset Legal Advisor, Attorney Eyal Yinon, and other parties, that the presidential elections will be held as planned on Tuesday.
Edelstein said ahead of the hearing that in the past 24 hours he has received many inquiries from Knesset members and lawyers who have offered him much advice, including suggestions to postpone the elections.
Edelstein: "The difficult atmosphere that continues to surround the race is fueling dissatisfaction with the process and casting a heavy shadow over the candidates and the Knesset.
""Citizen No. 1 should be No. 1 in cleanliness, trustworthiness, and morality, and reach the position of President of the State in the most honest and clean way. We have a duty to do everything to ensure that this is indeed the case. Unfortunately, it cannot be denied that in the current atmosphere, the presidential elections will be devoid of any dimension of solemnity and respectability - as they should be.".
"However, with a heavy conscience for the future, I decided to leave the original election date intact.".
