There is no limit: The committee for appointing judges met today (Thursday), after a long period in which no new judges were appointed - but it dispersed without any judges being elected.

At the beginning of the discussion, there was a storm, when Justice Minister Tzipi Livni sought to pass a sweeping decision, according to which any candidate who has a family relationship to one of the committee members or a sitting judge will be automatically disqualified. The decision came against the backdrop of an anonymous complaint that was filed last week with the State Comptroller's Office, according to which the list of candidates was selected based on the candidates' connections, and not necessarily on their suitability.

Livni managed to garner a majority for the proposal, one of the consequences of which was the disqualification of Rabbi Yinon Boaron, son of the dayan, Rabbi Boaron, and Rabbi Ariel Schweitzer, brother-in-law of the Chief Rabbi, Rabbi Lau. After the decision was passed, Rabbi Boaron angrily resigned from the committee, accusing Livni of not announcing her position in advance, thus preventing the committee members from preparing accordingly.

During the discussion, which lasted about three hours, the committee members discussed all the names of the candidates, with 60 remaining out of the 74 candidates for judges in the regional courts, and 14 new judges will be chosen from among them - one of them is Rabbi Eliyahu Amar, son of the Rashal, the Grand Rabbi of the Jewish People, Amar.

There are 20 candidates left in the race for the Grand Court, from whom five new judges will be chosen, after several years in which no new judge was appointed to the Grand Court, which has resulted in the fact that there are currently only 4 permanent judges in the Court and several others who were appointed temporarily, as substitutes.

The members of the committee for selecting dayanim are: Committee Chair - Minister of Justice Tzipi Livni, Chief Rabbi and Chief Rabbi of the HaSharon, Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef, Chief Rabbi of the HaSharon, Rabbi David Lau, Member of the Grand Court, Rabbi Zion Bo'aron, Member of the Grand Court, Rabbi Zion Al-Grabli, Minister of the Interior Gideon Sa'ar, MK Eli Yishai, MK Shuli Mu'alem, Attorney Mordechai Eisenberg, Attorney Asher Axelrod and Rachel Lev-Mor.

No new date has been set for the committee meeting.
