The diversionary exercise was successful: Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein married Irina Nevzlin - the daughter of billionaire Leonid Nevzlin - last night (Tuesday) a year after they met, in a small ceremony attended by about 180 guests.
The couple's wedding ceremony was held on the roof of the Aish HaTorah yeshiva overlooking the Temple Mount, and the wedding banquet took place in the large hall in the Western Wall tunnels.
Edelstein and Nevzlin's wedding was conducted by Rabbi Gideon Perl, the rabbi of the settlement of Alon Shvut, where Edelstein lived for many years, and Rabbi Benjamin Levin.
The guest list for the secret wedding, which included about 180 people, did not include any politicians, but it did include many Russian oligarchs, including Mikhail Khodorkovsky, as well as businesswoman Ofra Strauss and Jewish Agency Chairman Natan Sharansky.
The Walla website reported that the person who approached the yeshiva to hold the chuppah in front of the Western Wall was actually Nevzlin's family. The event on the roof of the yeshiva is considered rare, as the place is not usually open for events, except for donors and friends of the institution. In addition, complex logistical production was required due to the height of the roof, and the Western Wall laws that do not allow for free unloading and loading.
The chuppah and wedding tonight were a preview of the main ceremony that will take place next week at Ronit Farm, to which about 1,000 people were invited, including the Prime Minister, all members of the Knesset (except Oren Hazan and members of the Balad faction), and the entire top leadership of Israel's ruling elite.
