KKL-JNF Deputy Chairman Shlomo Deri - brother of Minister Aryeh Deri, withdrew his candidacy for a position as a director of the Israel Lands Authority (ILA) at noon. This was revealed on the 'Calcalist' website.
Deri himself linked the removal of the candidacy to the investigation against his brother, Aryeh Deri, who is apparently also involved in it, allegedly.
KKL-JNF Chairman Danny Atar announced the withdrawal of Deri's candidacy during a meeting of the KKL-JNF Board of Directors. The candidacy of Deri, one of the organization's vice-chairmen, for director of the Israel Land Authority, was revealed yesterday in Calcalist.
The announcement of the candidacy of the brother of the Shas chairman drew sharp public criticism, but also a storm within the JNF. At the same time, the Movement for Quality Government appealed to Atar and warned that Deri's appointment as RAMI would constitute a business conflict of interest.
According to the Israel Land Authority's regulations, a person with political or personal connections cannot be appointed as a director. The appointment of Deri's brother therefore violated the regulations.
In recent days, work has been done at the JNF, through an external law firm, to examine how and if it would still be possible to appoint Deri as a director of the Israel Land Authority, but this became unnecessary after the candidacy was withdrawn.
