Will the Likud primaries be canceled? Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is the only candidate registered to run for the leadership of the Likud movement, and its candidacy for prime minister in the elections for the 21st Knesset - so holding primaries in the movement now seems unnecessary.

Today (Sunday) at 12 noon, the deadline for submitting candidacies for Likud leadership officially ended, and as mentioned, no one registered to run against Netanyahu.

What do we do in such a situation? According to Article 58 of the Likud leadership election regulations, such a situation is expected to result in Netanyahu being automatically declared the winner of the primaries.

This is what the Likud constitution states: "If, at the end of the deadline for submitting candidacies, which was January 10, 2016, it becomes clear that only one member has submitted his candidacy, the Central Elections Committee and the Supervisory Committee will convene within three days of the deadline for publishing the first book of the list of candidates, that is, by and no later than January 14, 2016, and will declare the sole candidate as the candidate elected to the office of Chairman of the Likud and nominated for the office of Prime Minister of Israel in the elections for the 21st Knesset, and no elections will be held.".

But this situation is not ideal for the Prime Minister.

Besides the public aspect - a single candidacy in a democratic party, there is also a legal aspect: near the next election, senior candidates may claim that a full democratic process will not take place, and that additional elections must be held.

The Prime Minister's entourage is trying to resolve the issue through legal means, and various options are being raised that will ensure the Prime Minister's appointment as Likud chairman, and his nomination for prime minister - in the next elections.

The Zionist Camp faction responded: "Netanyahu wants to do in the State of Israel what he does in the Likud - to make sure that no one will face him. He can forget about it - we will continue to face him and set a different path.".
