Two palm trees that had been growing for years in the back part of the Western Wall plaza were cut down last night (Monday) after it was found that they were damaged by the red palm weevil.
The palm weevil is one of the most severe and destructive pests of the palm tree. It lays 300 white larvae that feed on the heartwood of the palm itself, without any visible damage, until the tree collapses and dies.
Due to the recent wave of pests that have attacked palm trees in Israel, the Western Wall Heritage Foundation has asked the Jerusalem Municipality to examine the safety of the palm trees that tower to great heights in the Western Wall plaza.
After an examination by an expert agronomist, it was found that the trees were infected and it was recommended that they be cut down urgently. Only after the tree trunks were cut down was the extent of the miracle revealed – when one of the trunks was found to be completely hollow, which undermined the stability of the tree and could, God forbid, endanger visitors to the Western Wall in the event of a collapse.
