President Shimon Peres responded this morning (Tuesday) to the sentencing of former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, saying that it was a "sad day." Peres added: "It is clear that what happened in the Olmert case is a legal process that is customary in democratic countries. The legal process is free from personal influences." Peres made the remarks at a press conference with the Prime Minister of Norway.

The Jewish Home responded: "This is a sad day for the citizens of Israel and an important day for the State of Israel, which has shown that it has no partiality, even for the most senior of its citizens. There is no one who is not held accountable on a day like this.".

Finance Minister Yair Lapid, Olmert's good friend: "The day a former prime minister was sent to prison is a sad day for Israeli democracy, and a sad day for me on a personal level. But at the same time, it is an important day in which the legal system showed that no one is above the law.".

MK Shelly Yachimovich was the first to respond: "Olmert's verdict and the reasons for it redeem the public from the mask of lies and deception spread by Olmert and his associates. This is an important and discouraging lesson for corrupt elected officials, and also a valuable message to the entire public, who knows today that the rule of law systems in Israel are good and professional and do not bow to high-ranking defendants, and this is why the public's faith in the rule of law is restored. Olmert's behavior is reprehensible, as he and his emissaries have persecuted, slandered and intimidated over the years every official and gatekeeper who dared to do their job, and it seems that they continue to do so even at this moment at the end of the trial. The Attorney General's Office and all other government officials deserve praise for the professional, mental and moral fortitude they have shown." "It is unfortunate that such a corrupt person controlled the top of the country and our lives, but there is reason to be proud that we are a clean democracy where everyone is equal before the law, and justice is seen and done.".
