The newspaper Makor Rishon and the NRG website will be sold to the newspaper Israel Hayom, owned by businessman Sheldon Adelson, for 17 million shekels, with Makor Rishon being sold for 14 million shekels and the NRG website for 3 million shekels. The agreement will be submitted to the Antitrust Commissioner and is subject to his approval.
Another group, the Jerusalem Post, led by Eli Ozer, competed against Israel Hayom, offering a lower bid. The group, led by Ozer, requested to be declared the winner in the event that the Antitrust Commissioner did not approve the deal with Israel Hayom, but the judge refused their request and ruled that in such a case the matter would be brought back to court for review.
Judge David Mintz initially reserved his opinion on the sale because it did not include Maariv, but only the newspaper's website, but ultimately accepted the companies' attorney's declaration that the important thing now is to save the brands and employees, not the companies.
As part of the agreement, it was determined that Makor Rishon's operations would be transferred to Israel Hayom, which would commit to employing 951 TP3T of its employees for a period of at least 12 months. 901 TP3T of the freelancers and the newspaper's distribution employees would also be employed by Israel Hayom for the same period. With regard to the NRG website, it was determined that Israel Hayom would commit to employing 5 out of 17 employees for a minimum period of 12 months as well.
The Maariv newspaper itself was not included in the sale, and it will continue to be published by Ben Zvi, while at the same time the trustees of Makor Rishon will continue to locate potential buyers for the newspaper. It should be noted that the former Maariv trustees demanded that the court oblige Ben Zvi to continue publishing the newspaper in any case, but the court chose not to make a decision on the matter at this stage.
