They forgot her in jail: A woman who was sent to a 48-hour prison was 'forgotten' there by the judge and was only released five months later.

This strange but believable story happened in the state of Indiana in the United States. The New York Daily News reports that the woman, Destiny Hoffman, 34, was sent to two days in jail after violating the rules of her drug rehab program.

A judge named Jerry Jacoby ordered the local Clark County sheriff to transfer her to the local jail, and not to release her until further court orders. But no such order came. The judge simply forgot about his prisoner, and did not send the order after 48 hours as planned.

The Daily Mail reports that another omission occurred in Hoffman's case when it became clear that she did not receive proper legal representation at all.

And how was Hoffman released in the end?

After 154 days behind bars, Deputy District Attorney Michaela Gilbert came across Hoffman's case file and, to her dismay, realized that the woman had served 152 days more than she deserved. She contacted the judge on duty, who ordered her immediate release. According to the Daily Mail, it is unclear why Hoffman did not contact prison authorities on her own initiative and request her release.

Now, Hoffman, who is already represented by an attorney named Nathan Massingo, is considering claiming compensation from the authorities and the district court.
