Is it permissible to kill a soldier? Akiva Novik reveals Monday morning'Yedioth Ahronoth'' An internal email correspondence conducted by residents of the town of Yitzhar, during which the question arose: Is it permissible to kill a soldier who came to evacuate Jews? Some claimed: "There is no halachic problem.".

The discussion took place immediately after some residents of Yitzhar destroyed a nearby military post. The internal email group 'Yitzharnikim' - a storm. Most residents condemned the attack and claim that it is not in keeping with the spirit of the settlement.

But one 22-year-old woman wrote: "I am in favor of throwing stones (at Jews, of course, there is no question about Arabs (parentheses in the original, Y.H.)), in certain situations - even if the stone results in the death of a soldier!!!"" The young woman added: "I will stand up to any external body against the stone throwers, even in cases where they were not necessary in my opinion! I will save the internal criticism and say it only to them, in a one-on-one meeting!""

Another resident, N., 17, agreed and even added: "There is no halakhic problem with killing a soldier during a night evacuation. I really haven't found anyone who can explain why there is no punishment for a thief who comes underground.".

Most residents condemned the remarks, and settlement officials even forwarded the material to the Israel Police and Central Command Major General Nitzan Alon, requesting that they investigate the incident and whether it constitutes prohibited incitement. The material was forwarded to the Attorney General's Office, which is expected to decide soon whether to order an investigation.

Following the statements, the two writers were removed from the community's forum.

Yitzhar spokesman Ezri Tovi said in response to Yedioth Ahronoth: "Such talk has been condemned by us in the past and will be condemned in the future. This is about a minor and a woman whose temper has dragged their tongues and they have already managed to retract them. On the other hand, we demand that the media condemn in every word expressions of violence and incitement to hatred and physical harm against the settler community.".

""The police, the army and the Shin Bet chose to ignore, in a very puzzling and disturbing way, the information we gave them about this serious statement," a source in the settler leadership said yesterday. "It's amazing that even though two weeks have passed, the writers have not even been questioned.".

Just today, following the publication in Yedioth Ahronoth, the young woman was arrested and taken for questioning. The Shi'ite District Police said that she was arrested for the activities of a nationalist crime group and that a search of her home found various objects that were apparently used for incitement purposes.
