The murder in the Safed synagogue: This morning, the Northern District Attorney's Office filed an indictment with the Nazareth District Court against Abraham Levi Yosef Bello, 42, a United States citizen.
According to the indictment, on April 13, 2014, at approximately 9:00 AM, the defendant arrived at the "Makarav" synagogue located at 37 Bar Yochai Street, Safed, carrying a commando knife with a blade approximately 18 cm long. At the same time, the deceased Tony (Tuvia) Rose, a 49-year-old resident of the city, was in the synagogue. The defendant entered the synagogue, approached the synagogue balcony and met the deceased, and without any provocation from the deceased, the defendant attacked the deceased, grabbed his neck with his hands and attempted to strangle him.
The deceased tried to fight the defendant and tried to push him off of him, but the defendant overpowered him and he was thrown onto his back onto the floor of the synagogue balcony.
While the deceased was lying on the floor, the defendant leaned over him, struck him several times with his hands, pulled out the knife and stabbed the deceased with the knife 17 times, among other things, in his chest, back, neck and right arm, causing the deceased's death.
The prosecution asked the court to detain the defendant until the end of the legal proceedings against him. At the request of the defense, he was sent for a psychiatric examination.
