MK Moshe Aboutbul arrived this morning (Thursday) to visit Prison 10, to strengthen the yeshiva students detained in the military detention facility - and to closely monitor their spiritual needs.
The Shas MK was accompanied by Attorney Shlomo Hadad from the legal department of the Chayei Olam organization, which works to assist yeshiva students against persecution and arrests.
During the visit, MK Abutbul met with about ten yeshiva students who were arrested for the "crime" of studying Torah.
Among other things, he visited the rabbi Aviel Cohen from Netivot, whose arrest when he was caught at the Gilat intersection in the vehicle he was driving, in front of his wife, caused a stir in the Torah world; the young man Yechiel Kutiner, from the Gur Hasidim; the young man Michael Petroff from Beit Shemesh, son of Rabbi Yosef Petroff, head of the Ma'alot HaTorah yeshiva, and more.
MK Abutbul presented the yeshiva students with the book Strengthening Faith and Confidence by the Rebbe, Rabbi David Abuhatzeira, and a special booklet, 'Likkuti Shas - Dekhula Baha,' which was enthusiastically received among the Torah scholars.
During the visit, MK Abutbul asked the yeshiva students for their parents' phone numbers, so that when he left, he could call them and encourage them about the privilege they have of being parents of sons who fulfill the commandment, "Blessed are you who are caught in the words of Torah.".
At the end of the visit, he met with the prison commander, Shai Ben-Baruch, and thanked him on behalf of Shas Chairman Aryeh Deri for his special sensitivity to the needs of the yeshiva students. Aboutbul raised a number of requests presented by the yeshiva students in the prison, including the purchase of the "Treasure of Wisdom" due to the lack of books in the prison.
The commander replied that he would consider the request positively.
Upon leaving the visit, MK Aboutbul held a situation assessment with Attorney Shlomo Hadad, following a series of complaints raised by the detainees.
After the visit, MK Aboutbul spoke with Rabbi Meir Levy, the father of the important young man Yosef Levy, who has been sitting near the prison for about two weeks - since his son's arrest in the military prison, and handed him a moving letter from his son Yosef, a letter full of longing and love.
At the end of the visit, MK Aboutbul said: "We came to strengthen and support the Torah students. Each one has his own painful story, we heard from them about the difficulties and the desire to return to the Beit Midrash. We asked them to assist with several important issues, and we discussed this with the prison commander.
""I told them: The entire Shas movement stands behind you. I said it and I will say it again - the world of Torah is the foundation of the Jewish people, and we must stop the persecution of Torah students in the Land of Israel.".
