The chairman of Religious Zionism, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, addressed today (Friday) the allegations that MK Moshe Gafni leveled against Absorption Minister Ofir Sofer last night.

Smotrich: "Knesset Member Gafni, religious Zionism and its Torah world really don't need your approval. Certainly not Minister Ofir Sofer, who proved his devotion to the people of Israel with his own body, when he was seriously wounded on the battlefield and received a medal for it.".
""Instead of lashing out at the heroes of religious Zionism, it would be better to issue a clear call: Whoever does not study Torah, should enlist immediately. It's that simple.".
Gafni replied to him: "We complied with all the clauses of the coalition agreement and did not harm anything of yours, neither positions, nor budgets, nor localities. Suddenly, when the most important issue for us comes up, there are those among you who choose to oppose.".
""If Sofer is unable to fulfill the commitments he signed and conduct himself with basic coalition fairness, he should resign from the position he received thanks to our support.".
Degel chairman MK Moshe Gafni last night sharply attacked Minister of Immigration and Absorption Ofir Sofer of Religious Zionism, following remarks he made about the mandatory conscription of those whose Torah is not their profession.
""Opir Sofer has no idea of the importance of Torah study and its role in preserving the existence of the Jewish people throughout the generations," Gafni said. "It would be better for him to focus on the issues of immigration and absorption that he is entrusted with, and not interfere in issues in which he has no basic understanding.".
The confrontation broke out after Minister Sofer had earlier addressed the Degel MKs, ahead of their meeting with Maran Hared Lando, and called on them to change direction: "Instead of addressing the rabbis to promote a law that does not have a majority, because I will oppose it along with other MKs from the coalition - address them with a request that they call on those who do not study to enlist and help fight.".
