National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir spoke today (Monday) with the Rishon LeZion, Rabbi David Yosef, and consulted with him about the pilgrimage to Meron. This was in light of the intention of extremist Haredim to ascend the mountain, despite Home Front Command instructions and the cancellation of the celebration hosted by the Prime Minister due to fears of a security incident from Lebanon.
The Prime Minister supported the minister and emphasized that he was acting with proper judgment.
Minister Ben Gvir described in the conversation the early discussions that led to restrictions on the mountain, despite the public price: "My advisors told me - this is not popular. I told them: Guys, this could be full of deaths.
""I asked the commissioner: If one missile falls, what happens? They told me: There will be 100 deaths. I told them: Are you normal? My brothers who come to Meron are not strangers.".
Minister Ben Gvir: "The police did not come to war, this is the Haredi public and they are our brothers. The Commissioner gave an order to put the batons in the vehicles and to use them only in emergencies.".
Rabbi David Yosef congratulated the minister and affirmed: "You are acting with correct and true judgment.".
The minister added: "In a wide deployment of 30,000 police officers, you will always have some police officer who will do something wrong." He noted, on the other hand, the extremist elements who will try to disrupt order: "There will be all kinds of Neturi Karta there who have no law and no judge.".
Rishon LeZion Rabbi David Yosef concluded the conversation by strengthening the minister's hands: "Congratulations, may you be strong.".
