Justice Minister Yariv Levin issued a strong statement this morning (Wednesday) challenging the Supreme Court's authority to discuss the continuation of the term of National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir.
The minister's remarks come as High Court judges are discussing petitions demanding the minister's removal from office.
Levin stated unequivocally that the very holding of the hearing exceeds the court's authority. "The hearing taking place this morning in the High Court of Justice regarding the dismissal of Minister Ben Gvir is against the law," said the Minister of Justice.
He added a dramatic statement about the practical meaning of a possible ruling: "The judges' decision will have no effect anyway.".
Levin emphasized the principle of separation of powers as he sees it, and argued that the appointment and dismissal of ministers is the exclusive prerogative of the executive branch. "The authority to appoint or dismiss a minister is given by law to the Prime Minister and not to the court," he clarified.
Levin gave full support to Minister Ben-Gvir, relying on the public mandate the government received: "My friend Minister Ben-Gvir will continue to serve in his position, by virtue of the people's decision and the trust of the Knesset.".
