Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the residents of the north this evening (Thursday) in a filmed statement - and made it clear that the fighting in Lebanon continues.

This was after he issued a dramatic statement announcing the opening of negotiations with Lebanon.

Netanyahu said: "Dear residents of the north, I am proud of you. You continue to stand strong.

""I want to tell you: There is no ceasefire in Lebanon. We continue to hit Hezbollah hard, and we will not stop until we restore your security.".

""Our tremendous achievements both in Iran and against the axis of evil have brought about a historic change in Israel's status in the region. They have also brought about a change in our relations with countries that did not exist before.".

Netanyahu noted that alongside the fighting, he instructed the cabinet to open direct negotiations with Lebanon: "After repeated requests from the Lebanese government to open peace negotiations with us, last night I instructed the cabinet to open direct negotiations with Lebanon in order to achieve two goals: one - disarming Hezbollah. And the second - a historic, sustainable peace agreement between Israel and Lebanon.".

Netanyahu emphasized: "Israel is stronger than ever, Iran is weaker than ever.".

He made it clear that he intends to continue promoting additional peace agreements: "I have already brought 4 peace agreements with Arab countries, and I intend to bring more. Real peace, peace from strength.".
